Desde el lunes 5 de setiembre y demas lunes en adelante a las 10pm, tendremos una nuevo ciclo de “jam sessions” en el Jazz Zone de Miraflores.

Este nuevo espacio esta conformado por una banda de casa, quien será el anfitrion del evento y albergara a los músicos participantes. Dicha banda esta conformada por: Hugo Alcazar (batería), Jose “Chick” Aguirre (piano) y Omar Rojas (bajo).

La banda de casa iniciará las sesiones con unos cuantos temas, dando después pase a un invitado “estrella”, que compartirá con nosotros un poco de su vida y experiencia musical mediante una pequeña entrevista y jam. En la última parte del show se dará inicio al clásico Jam Session donde diversos músicos de la escena podrán participar.

World Jam es una propuesta que busca unir a todos los géneros musicales a través del lenguaje del jazz. Esperamos que todos sean parte de este gran ciclo de de jams.

Over the past few years, Alcázar has dominated the major Afro-Peruvian Jazz releases, making his presence known on Gabriel Alegría’s 2008 release Nuevo Mundo, Geoffrey Keezer’s 2009 album Áurea, and Alegría’s 2010 recording Pucusana.

Alcázar creatively blends important elements of each Afro-Peruvian style into his drum kit patterns, but his jazz influenced approach sets him apart, as he plays with the modern interactive spirit of Elvin Jones. As more artists pursue their interest in Afro-Peruvian rhythms, they would be wise find some time with Alcázar and check out his ground-breaking approach to Latin Jazz drumming."

The International Percussion Festival of Rosario is designed both for musicians and the general public, working from different areas / approaches through the following instances:

El Festival Internacional de Percusión de Rosario está destinado tanto a músicos como al público en general, se trabaja desde diferentes espacios/enfoques, a través de las siguientes instancias:

Espacios de exposición: clínicas, conciertos, conferencias, exposición de instrumentos.
Estrenos: de obras comisionadas especialmente para el Festival.

De esta manera, el Festival contribuirá al desarrollo y crecimiento de la Percusión en Rosario y Argentina, a través de:

La difusión y acceso a métodos, técnicas y escuelas, a visiones innovadoras, que permiten el enriquecimiento de los percusionistas y educadores
El intercambio entre artistas de diferentes países, culturas y lenguajes percusivos
El desarrollo del ámbito de la construcción de instrumentos en Rosario y Argentina
La posibilidad de darle al público el acceso a la gran variedad de música hecha con percusión.

El Festival Internacional de Percusión de Rosario abarca los siguientes temas o áreas:

Los diferentes leguajes de la Percusión: sinfónica o académica, popular, batería
El espacio pedagógico: escuelas, orquestas, instituciones musicales. Conceptos, roles, objetivos de cada parte. Reflexión, intercambio de ideas
El quehacer artístico en los diferentes contextos desde los más tradicionales hasta los más innovadores o de vanguardia
La importancia del trabajo con el cuerpo en el arte de la percusión. Técnicas que aporten al percusionista herramientas para un desarrollo sano y fluido de su actividad.

2009 Latin Jazz Drum Kit Player Of The Year: Hugo Alcázar - Áurea, Geoffrey Keezer

The drum kit holds a unique position in the Latin Jazz world that both breaks tradition and pushes it into the future. In traditional music from South America and the Caribbean, the drum kit doesn’t hold a position in most ensembles - rhythmic duties are given to a variety of percussion instruments. A skilled drum kit player can combine the interlocking percussion patterns from most South American and Caribbean ensembles into a single part. This involves the integration of several different sounds into the drum kit and a variety of new techniques. In a Cuban setting, a variety of bells move into the drum kit; in a Brazilian setting, agogo bells and the tambourin might fit into the kit; and Peruvian work can utilize a cajon. Not every drum kit player will take the time to move beyond their standard application in order to execute these rhythms authentically. For some musicians, a watered down version of the rhythms suit their needs; in a setting that respects tradition the correct application of these rhythms are absolutely necessary though. The drum kit player that successfully masters these rhythms opens their performance opportunities into several exciting possibilities. In a jazz setting the drum kit player with all these talents holds the ability to interact with soloists, travel into swing or funk sections, emphasize key points in a composition. With these factors in place, the drum kit acts as a key connection between tradition and innovation.

2009 Latin Jazz Drum Kit Player Of The Year Hugo Alcázar brings together Peruvian tradition and a forward looking jazz aesthetic on pianist Geoffrey Keezer’s Áurea. Between Keezer’s vast jazz abilities and the cadre of Peruvian expertise, the recording contains all the right elements to guarantee an Afro-Peruvian Jazz classic - but Alcázar is the glue that makes the product work. Alcázar’s ability to mix the cajon with a traditional drum kit allows him to blend improvisatory jazz aesthetics with traditional Peruvian rhythms, setting the stage for an honest Afro-Peruvian Jazz performance. As Keezer places a richly harmonized structure beneath Sofia Rei Koutsovitis’ vocal on “La Flor Azul,” Alcázar creates an addictively interactive drive, playing cajon and ride cymbal simultaneously. Alcázar’s jazz festejo swings with a charging forward motion on “Cayendo Para Arriba” allowing him to comment upon solo work from Keezer and saxophonist Steve Wilson with an Elvin Jones inspired intensity. A mixture of space and understated intensity informs Alcázar’s landó rhythm on “Miraflores,” helping the group ride the song through a strong series of rises and falls. A sensitive duet between Keezer and Koutsovitis on “Vidala De Lucho” grows into a captivating emotional climax driven by impressive brush work from Alcázar. There’s a wealth of possibilities for the drum kit in this context, and Alcázar captures them all, delivering an incredibly musical performance throughout the album.

As every third Sunday of April, every year, the most renowned musicians rendezvous for a Homage to Pasache at Callejón del Buque, a sincere musical tribute to composer Félix Pasache and the legendary neighborhood where he grew up to be one of the most relevant and successful song writers for Afro Peruvian singers such as Rómulo Varillas (Embajadores Criollos), Lucha Reyes, Arturo "Zambo" Cavero (with Oscar Avilés), Manuel Donayre, Eva Ayllón.

Baterista, percusionista, compositor, educador, considerado "The Best Latin Jazz Drum Kit Player" por Latin Jazz Corner (USA) en 2008 por la grabación en el disco "Nuevo Mundo" de Gabriel Alegría Afro-Peruvian Jazz Sextet, y actualmente está nominado al "Grammy Awards 2010" con el proyecto de jazz afro-peruano "AUREA" del reconocido pianista norteamericano Geoffrey Keezer.

Hugo nació el 23 de mayo del año 1971 en la ciudad de Lima. A los 8 años descubrió su pasión por la percusión, la cual nunca lo ha dejado.

Formación

Estudió en el Conservatorio Nacional de Música en la especialidad de Percusión con Juan Chavez y de Improvisación en el jazz, dictado por el maestro inglés Martin Joseph.

Posteriormente estudió Armonía Musical (1997) con el maestro Jorge Madueño y Dirección Musical (2000) con el maestro Gabriel Alegría.

Ha realizado estudios de cajón peruano con Juan “Cotito” Medrano, Leonardo “Gigio” Parodi y Freddy “Huevito” Lobatón, grandes exponentes del medio artístico limeño y en el año 2006 recibió clases de batá drums con el reconocido percusionista y educador cubano Roberto Borrell.

Investigaciones

Realizó investigaciones sobre el cajón, percusión y música afro-peruana, realizando diversas clases maestras, talleres y seminarios en el Perú y Estados Unidos; en este último en más de 20 universidades, 18 escuelas y Festivales de Jazz.

Ha investigado sobre la percusión africana y su ejecución con instrumentos nativos realizando talleres y clases maestras en el Perú.

Ha desarrollado la adaptación de los patrones rítmicos afro-peruanos ejecutados en la batería y así mismo la fusión de estos con el jazz.

Actualmente se encuentra terminando su libro sobre ritmos afro-peruanos en el cajón y la batería en la música peruana y el jazz.

Principales Proyectos

En 1991 inicia su carrera profesional como baterista de latin jazz, fusión andina y afroperuana, formando parte de agrupaciones musicales tales como César Peredo y los de Adentro, Gabriel Alegria's Afro-Peruvian Jazz Sextet, Gaitan Castro, José de la Cruz "Guajaja", Richie Zellon. Así mismo, ha pertenecido al staff de músicos de cantantes de reconocida trayectoria como Eva Ayllón, Cecilia Bracamonte, Elsa María Elejalde, Pilar De la Oz, Julie Freundt, entre otras.

Siendo director de la Orquesta Juvenil de Música Nueva de la Asociación Jazz Perú participó en la grabación de la ópera jazz “Libertad” en Montpellier – Francia (2002) y en el North Sea Jazz Festival - Holanda.

En los años 2004 y 2005 fue invitado por “Music Market”, representante de la marca Yamaha en el Perú, para participar en las clases maestras de reconocidos bateristas internacionales como Akira Jimbo (uno de los más grandes bateristas del Japón), Walfredo Reyes Jr. (ex-baterista de Santana) y Sony Emory (ex- baterista de Earth Wind and Fire) con quienes ejecutó a dúo piezas de batería.

Durante los años 2002 al 2007 ha realizado clases maestras de ritmos afroperuanos en los Festivales Internacionales de Jazz en Lima realizando demostraciones de cajón, batería y percusión. Así mismo, participó en conciertos con grandes personalidades del jazz, tales como Maria Schneider Orchestra (Ganadora del Grammy al Mejor Disco de Jazz Orquestal, 2006-2007) Ingrid Jensen (trompetista canadiense seleccionada por Downbeat como uno de los músicos más importantes de jazz) Russ Ferrante (pianista norteamericano líder del grupo Yellow Jackets), Pedro Aznar, Eric Bird, Katchie Cartwright, Bill Watrous, Bobby Shew, Kathleen Grace, Roberto de Magris, Marco Castelli, Arthur Lipner, Billy Ker, Jeff Gardner, Jeff Collela, Geoffrey Keezer, John Benitez, Kenny Werner, Mark Levine, Michele Weir, Seattle Women’s Jazz Orchestra y la Orquesta Proyecto Jazz Perú con el baterista afamado Ndugu Chancler.

Desde el año 2005 al 2009 realizó giras internacionales a USA y Canadá con el trompetista peruano Gabriel Alegría, en las que realizó presentaciones en importantes clubes de jazz, así como clases maestras sobre ritmos afroperuanos fusionados con jazz en diversos colegios y universidades.

En el 2006 participó como percusionista en el disco AT SEA, de la famosa trompetista de jazz, Ingrid Jensen.

En el 2008 fue llamado por Maria Schneider para aportar en el nombre del tema y a su vez realizar la parte rítmica de cajón y percusión de la composición "Aires de Landó" del disco Sky Blue, ganador del Grammy Awards 2008.

Actualmente forma parte del proyecto musical de jazz afro-peruano-argentino “AUREA” de Geoffrey Keezer (USA), reconocido como uno de los más finos pianistas contemporáneos del jazz actual. La producción Aurea está nominado al Grammy Awards 2010 como The Best Latin Jazz Album.

Educador y promotor de la música peruana

En el 2002 participó como expositor en la “29th Annual Conference of Internacional Association for Jazz Education” - IAJE, realizada en Los Angeles - California, con el tema Introducción al Jazz Peruano junto con Gabriel Alegría y como invitado a Alex Acuña, en la que hizo un análisis exhaustivo de la música negra afro-peruana y su fusión con el jazz. Durante la conferencia fue invitado a participar en la clase maestra del arreglista, compositor y productor Roger Treece, con el tema “Canto y Ritmo sin Sección Rítmica” acompañando a la cantante de jazz Tierney Sutton.

En el 2002 fue Director de La Orquesta Juvenil de Música Nueva - OJMN, perteneciente a la Asociación Internacional Jazz Perú. En el 2003 viajó a Europa con la OJMN, y tuvo la oportunidad de estrenar su primera composición para ensamble titulada “Raíces” en el North Sea Jazz Festival de Holanda.

En el 2005 participó como expositor en la “32th Annual Conference of Jazz Educator” - IAJE en Los Angeles - California con el tema Desarrollo del Jazz Peruano.

It may not happen from the first note, but soon the music on Afroperuano begins to magically evoke the sound of the wind rushing through the rarified air of the Peruvian Andes. It is also possible to feel the swishing of skirts and the infectious gaiety of dancers as the fleet fingers of Yuri Juarez glide and fly across the neck of his guitar. They tingle and crash upon strings sharing the passion of the music with a group of fine artists. Juarez is able to conjure up the air of carnival as it dances down happy streets. Mystery and magic abounds on this fine tribute to the gorgeous mixture of African and native melody and rhythm that is rife on this record.

Yuri Juarez has a unique “vocal” style of playing. He spits and rolls out his notes as if he were employing tongue and lips and palette as well as fingers and thumbs on both hands. As a happy result, his festejo and huayno skip and bustle with sun-kissed brightness and excitement. His valse glides and pirouettes with extraordinary grace. The polka swings with mad abandon and the lando might just elicit a flood of emotions as its harmony trembles with elemental sadness, sometimes.

“Cantelo Usted” and “Rosa Del Mar” are extraordinary in both their adherence to the classical rhythms and a bow towards the contemporary interpretation of an otherwise old art form. Melodically these are superbly rendered and with dynamics and phrasing that could only come from an instrumental imitation of a romantically imagined vocal rendition. Similar praise can be sung of Juarez’s interpretation of the valse in a wonderful ballad, “Guisella” that does favorably with a later one – “Insistire” – composed by the legendary Carlos Hayre. Here Juarez shines with particular brightness as he is moody and brilliantly alone, unaccompanied by the rest of the musicians as he picks his way through the labyrinthine melody of the song.

There is never a dull moment on this record that features several other folk forms. The panalivio, that is entitled “Acuariana” transcends the simplistic with an unusual measure of atonality and a surprising reference to the Brasilian samba as the music picks up the pace. Chucho Valdes’ beautiful and popular “Mambo Influenciado” is respectfully rendered as a brilliant and lively zamacueca and evokes the fun of the coastal festivities, while still harking back to the “mambo.” And of course “Carnival de Arequipa” brings the set to a close with Enderson Herencia playing superbly on quena, zampoña and charango as the group makes a spectacular reference to the binary rhythm of the huayno – the heart of Andean dance bases in pentatonica.

The musicians on this session excel in all departments. Drummer, Hugo Alcázar is characteristically self-effacing, but he is busy rattling the snares and rumbling at the tom-toms. His shimmering cymbal splashes are melodically potent. The various percussionists are right on the money every time they caress or slap the skin. Theirs is an almost spiritual connection with the art of twanging the music out of the quijada and coaxing the cajon to thunder ecstatically. The string quartet brings other worldly grace to the music they interpret and improvise upon. Enderson Herencia appears to be omnipresent and always just where he has to be harmonically for Juarez to escape on his solo expeditions. And it is always a joy to hear Pilar de la Hoz interpret the vocal parts of the music with Jorge Pardo and others in the chorus when called for.

Afroperuano is further proof that the music of Peru is fast occupying a prominent part of the world stage and Yuri Juarez can take comfort for playing his part in bring attention to it where it matters.

Este grupo taller, representa el I Combo de Jazz Afro Peruano formado en Lima bajo la dirección del baterista y percusionista Hugo Alcázar (baterista de jazz afro peruano), con el objetivo de formar a músicos en esta nueva corriente, logrando con ello una nueva aptitud, creatividad, perfeccionamiento, integración y resolución hacia el Jazz Afro Peruano.

El Conservatorio Nacional de Música tiene el agrado de presentar al reconocido percusionista peruano quien ofrecerá una Clase Maestra con la participación del l COMBO TALLER DE JAZZ AFROPERUANO formado y conducido por Hugo Alcázar.

Hugo Alcázar, estudió en el Conservatorio Nacional de Música, la especialidad de Percusión y aprendió el cajón con los mejores “cajoneros” de Lima: Juan "Cotito" Medrano, Leonardo "Gigio" Parodi y Freddy "Huevito" Lobatón. En el 2006 tomó clases de Batá con el reconocido percusionista cubano Roberto Borrel.

Ha participado con los grandes del jazz como Ingrid Jensen, Russell Ferrante, Pedro Aznar, Bobby Shew, Arthur Lipner, Billy Kerr, Jeff Gardner, Mark Levine, etc.
Como intérprete se ha presentado en varios conciertos con Eva Ayllón, Cesar Peredo y Los de Adentro, Richie Zellon, Cecilia Alessandra, Fusa Trio, Pilar de La Hoz y "Geoffrey Keezer Aurea Project"

Es parte del "Sexteto de Jazz Afroperuano Gabriel Alegría" y realizan giras en los EEUU, Canadá y Perú, mostrando su arte en la fusion con el jazz.

Actualmente trabaja en dictado de talleres y clases maestras donde se combinan el jazz con nuestro ritmo afroperuano. Hugo Alcázar es entonces no sólo un gran percusionista, sino también un gran educador y compositor.

Los objetivos de la Clase Maestra son: dar a conocer cómo se puede adaptar una melodía stándar de jazz con sonido afroperuano, brindar información sobre diferentes bases rítmicas para todo instrumentista, informar sobre cómo fusionar en la batería ambos estilos y dar a conocer cómo funciona un ensamble de jazz afro peruano.

En esta Clase Maestra participará el I COMBO TALLER DE JAZZ AFROPERUANO de Hugo Alcázar conformado por: Evelyn Obregón en el cajón y percusión, Osmar Okuma en el Contrabajo, Pedro Espinoza en la Guitarra, Lorenzo Ferrero en el Saxo, Eric Koechlin en la Trompeta. Nuestro profesor Hugo Alcázar conducirá al grupo y estará en la batería.

Docentes que participarán en II ENCUENTRO NACIONAL DE PERCUSIÓN:

Mathias Reumert, Dinamarca: es un solista intérprete de multipercusión, de marimba y vibráfono, especialista en música contemporánea. Recibió el primer premio en el International Gaudeamus Interpreters Competition 2007 en Amsterdam, Holanda, siendo el primer solista de percusión en lograrlo desde el inicio de esta competencia en 1979. Ha sido ganador de varias competiciones,como el Concours International de Vibraphone 2002 en Francia y el Percussive Arts Society Solo Vibraphone Contest 2004. Ha dado recitales en la mayoría de los festivales en USA, Francia, Holanda, Polonia, y a través de toda Escandinavia. Desde el 2008 está integrando la plana docente en percusión del Annual Institute for Contemporary Performance Practice en el New England Conservatory en Boston.

Gwendolyn Burgett, Estados Unidos: es Profesora Asistente de la Especialidad de Percusión en la Universidad Estatal de Michigan, College of Music. Thrasher fué gandadora del Keiko Abe Prize en la segunda edición del World Marimba Competition en Okaya, Japan, y la ganadora del primer premio en el concurso National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts. Thrasher ha estudiado con os renombrados profesores Robert van Sice, Keiko Abe, y John Beck. Ella ostenta grados del Interlochen Arts Academy, Eastman School of Music, Peabody Conservatory, y Yale School of Music.

Efraín Toro, Puerto Rico: Inició sus estudios de música con Fitz Morris y Robert Carter. Posteriormenteingresó al Conservatorio de Nueva Inglaterra en Boston, donde estudió con Alan Dawson. Ha sido acompañante de figuras legendarias del jazz como los saxofonistas Stan Getz y Chico Freeman. Ha grabado con varios artistas como los jazzistas George Benson, Dave Grusin, Lee Ritenoir; el tenor Placido Domingo y con los grupos: Los Lobos, Chicago, y muchos otros. Con Alex Acuña grabó el disco “LosHijos del Sol”. Ha participado en la grabación de la música de “The Lion King” de Disney. . Efraín ha enseñado en el renombrado Musician's Institute, California Institute of the Arts y la UCLA. Es autor de cinco libros para músicos y artistas en donde explica sus teorías y destrezas en tópicos como el ritmo, técnicas de mano y dedos, estilos Latinos, y métricas poco comunes.

Hugo Alcazar, Perú: Baterista, percusionista, compositor y educador. Estudió en el Conservatorio Nacional y ha realizado estudios de cajón peruano y batá de manera particular. Ha acompañado cantantes peruanas de reconocida trayectoria y artistas internacionales entre los que se encuentran Maria Schneider Orchestra (Ganadora del Grammy al Mejor Disco de Jazz Orquestal, 2006) Ingrid Jensen, Russ Ferrante, Eric Bird, Katchie Cartwright, Bill Watrous, Kathleen Grace, Arthur Lipner, Jeff Gardner, Mark Levine, Seattle Women’s Jazz Orchestra y la Orquesta Proyecto Jazz Perú con Ndugu Chancler, entre otros más. Ha tocado junto a Akira Jimbo, Walfredo Reyes Jr. y Sony Emory.

Arturo Benavides, Perú: Inició sus estudios musicales con el profesor Juan S. Chávez, en la Sección Preparatoria para Jóvenes del Conservatorio Nacional de Música continuándolos luego en la Escuela Nacional de Folklore “José María Arguedas” de donde egresa del Programa de Formación Artística en la Especialidad de Folklore, mención Música. Domina varios instrumentos de percusión, habiéndose especializado en la ejecución de ritmos tradicionales peruanos y de Centro y Latinoamérica.También ha incursionado en el jazz latino y la salsa. Como intérprete a integrado agrupaciones de diversos géneros como orquestas sinfónicas, conjuntos de música Criolla y negroide y de jazz. Es profesor de la ENF José María Arguedas.

Laureano Rigol, Cuba /Perú: Músico cubano radicado en Lima desde 1994. Graduado del Instituto Superior de Artes (ISA) de La Habana, Cuba en la especialidad de Percusión. Ha desarrollado una intensa labor musical tanto en la docencia como con su participación en diferentes proyectos musicales que lo han llevado a compartir escenario y grabaciones con destacados músicos nacionales e internacionales

Alonso Acosta, Perú: Vibrafonista y percusionista. Estudió en el Conservatorio Nacional de Música piano y percusión, titulándose en la especialidad de Percusión. Es un músico activo de jazz y música contemporánea y compositor de obras para percusión.

Juan Chávez, Perú: Master en Música,Catholic University of America, Washington D.C., EEUU. Inició sus estudios profesionales en el Conservatorio Nacional de Música obteniendo los Títulos de Músico, especialidad Percusión y el de Profesor de Educación Musical.

Moisés Siura, Perú: percusionista titulado en el Conservatorio Nacional de Música. Desde el 2007 es profesor del Conservatorio Nacional de Música en la Sección de Estudios Preparatorios para Niños y Jóvenes.

Bienvenidos al Festival Jazz Perú 2009.
Por octavo año consecutivo Jazz Perú Internacional presenta el festival de jazz más grande del Perú. Le damos la bienvenida a más de 70 artistas de los Estados Unidos, Hong Kong, Venezuela, Latvia, Colombia y Perú! Por primera vez en la historia del festival se agrega la ciudad del Cusco y extendemos los conciertos masivos a los distritos de La Victoria y San
Borja. Los invitamos a disfrutar de conciertos y clases maestras y de acompañarnos día a día.

El artista estelar del Festival Jazz Perú es el legendario pianista Norteamericano Kenny Werner quien llega a Lima con la expectativa de explorar nuestra música. El declara: “Estoy muy entusiasmado por mi participación como estelar en el festival Jazz Perú 2009. Gracias al trabajo de Gabriel Alegría he escuchado mucho acerca del jazz en el Perú. Quiero conocer más.”

La productora general de Jazz Perú Internacional, Laurandrea Leguía, nos cuenta: “La meta este año es llevar el jazz a la mayor cantidad de gente posible, superando los años anteriores en nuestra llegada a un público nuevo. Con eventos descentralizados nos perfilamos a interesar a mucha más gente a que se animen a disfrutar del jazz.”

El director artístico del Festival es el Dr. Gabriel Alegría quien representará al Perú con su galardonado Sexteto de Jazz Afro Peruano.

El Festival del 2009 se caracteriza por ser la primera edición que efectivamente descentraliza el jazz en el Perú. El Jazz Zone de Miraflores seguirá siendo “el corazón “ de las actividades y también se ofrecerán conciertos en los municipios de San Borja y La Victoria. Lo más significativo de la descentralización es que por primera vez se llevará el festival a la ciudad del Cusco. El Maestro Kenny Werner se presentará en esa ciudad el 28 de Mayo gracias al auspicio del Instituto Cultural Peruano Norteamericano-Cusco.

Finalmente, se inicia este año una importante colaboración con la flamante organización Asociación Pro Jazz del Perú, cuya meta será la de forjar el primer Concurso Interescolar de Jazz de nuestro país cuya sede será el colegio Alexander Von Humboldt. Rubén Romero, presidente de Pro Jazz Perú comenta: “Hemos estado pensando en crear el Festival Interescolar de Jazz

hace varios años. Es una señal muy importante dar este paso y poder exponer a nuestros alumnos a los maestros y jóvenes que llegan de todo el mundo.” El premio para los alumnos más destacados será recibir instrucción personalizada y lograr presentarse en escena junto a los artistas del festival.

Continued creative exploration is an essential piece of any artist’s career, and each new direction requires a deep dedication to study and interpretation of a distinct style. Most musicians will find inspiration in their surroundings, and in many cases, they can quickly make a connection with another artist experienced in their new direction. They inevitably will discover new recordings, decode some playing techniques, and start to build a rudimentary understanding of the style. At this point, artists need to decide just how deeply they will dive into the depth of this new style - will this simply be a surface study that will add a different color to their sound or a concerted effort to perform the music authentically? An experienced musician can generally perform a surface study independently, but the artist looking for a wider knowledge needs to expand his or her horizons. They need to connect with musicians that carry a long history in the music - musicians that can serve as mentors, collaborators, and role models. Performing with these types of musicians will push the artist towards a greater understanding and eventually send them on the path towards authentic performance. Once they travel down this road, the artist needs to find a balance between authenticity and interpretation, a bridge between their previous musical experiences and their new knowledge. This may be the hardest part of the study while the musician attempts to be creative without draining the soul from either tradition - a precarious task for any artist. The results can be interesting, inspiring, and often insightful for all parties. Pianist Geoffrey Keezer branches into new territory with Áurea, an outstanding project that combines Keezer’s rich jazz background with Peruvian and Argentinean music.

Exploring Peruvian Jazz With Keezer’s Original Compositions
Several tracks emphasize the instrumentalists in Keezer’s group as they explore a combination of Afro-Peruvian music and jazz through a series of Keezer’s original compositions. Saxophonist Steve Wilson and Keezer wind a dramatic melody around band hits on “Cayendo Para Arriba” until bassist Essiet Okon Essiet leaps into an angular groove that supports the composition’s urgent tone. Keezer immediately rides off this sensation with a frantic improvisation that inspires enthusiastic response from drummer Hugo Alcázar. After a brief interlude, Wilson slides into his statement slowly, building into an assertive momentum with a biting tone and strong rhythmic ideas. Alcázar and percussionist Jon Wikan establish a thick cajon groove that serves as the foundation for Wilson’s bluesy and distinctly modern melody on “Araña Amarilla.” Keezer relishes in the spacious groove, stretching long lines full of connected themes over the driving cajons. The percussionists disappear momentarily behind Wilson’s improvisation as he carefully explores the new texture, finding his way into rapid and long connected lines that push the band a rhythmic drive. Keezer and Alcázar create a furious momentum through an involved call and response on “Leucadia” until guitarist Peter Sprague joins Keezer on a dramatic melody. Sprague’s acoustic tone gives an understated quality to his improvisation, but he soon pushes the rhythm section into a rumbling frenzy with extended passages full of quick runs. Keezer assertively begins his statement with a bold melody, quickly moving into rhythmically tense figures and fast notes for an exciting solo. Alcázar and Wikan provide a simmering lando groove beneath a staccato unison melody between Keezer and Okon Essiet on “Miraflores.” The solo section contrasts the sharp melody with an open and flowing feel as the group allows the time to be flexible. Keezer takes full advantage of this context, utilizing space and texture to build a thoughtful statement that climaxes into a passionate idea. These tracks display the group’s dual personality with class and style, relying upon Keezer’s deep jazz background and his band’s foundation in Afro-Peruvian styles.

Making A Connection To Folklore Through Strong Vocals
Many pieces employ vocals, bringing the music closer to folklore while never loosing its deep connection to jazz. Alcázar and Keezer form a powerful duo, establishing an elegant classic feel on Mario Amedo Gallo and Antonio Rodriguez Villar’s “La Flor Azul.” Vocalist Sofia Koutsovitis enters with confidence and continues the traditional feel already established, infusing her own personality through thoughtful articulations. A ferocious drum fill leads into an aggressive solo from Keezer, who runs full force until Koutsovitis returns with an impassioned version of the melody. Keezer and guitarist Mike Moreno create a beautifully thin texture on Eduardo Falú and Jaime Dávalos’ “La Nostalgiosa,” providing a foundation for Koutsovitis to engage in a deeply personal reading of the lyrics. The rhythm section joins in layers, building into a galloping rhythmic drive behind Ron Blake’s gentle flute improvisation. Koutsovitis returns over the new feel, and exposes a rich meaning to the lyrics with passion and insight, delivering an album highlight performance. Phil O’Connor’s funky bass clarinet line adds a unique twist to Alcázar and Wikan’s moderate festejo groove on “Una Bruja Buena,” setting the stage for a lush and searching melody from Blake and Koutsovitis. Keezer relies upon strong melodic development to build momentum over the churning groove, taking several opportunities to push his ideas forward with syncopation. Koutsovitis’ dynamic scat work anchors an effective interlude, leading into an engaging solo from Blake, who brings together quick fluid lines and sharp rhythmic attacks. Keezer establishes an introspective mood with a thoughtful unaccompanied solo on Juan Falú’s “Vidala De Lucho,” applying a rich and personal approach to melody and harmony. Koutsovitis builds upon the song’s dramatic setting with a passionate melodic performance that makes full use of her strong and distinct phrasing while Keezer supports her with assertively creative comping. Alcázar and bassist Susan Wulff enter with a jazz ballad foundation, pushing Koutsovitis to another level and providing a setting for Keezer’s deep improvisation. Keezer successfully walks the line between jazz and South American traditions with the inclusion of Koutsovitis, which provides the opportunity to explore authentically Peruvian and Argentinean compositions.

A Deeply Satisfying Creative Exploration
Keezer displays the results of his creative exploration through Peruvian and Argentinean music on Áurea, delivering inspiring Latin Jazz with an even balance of tradition and modern personality. As a pianist, Keezer established himself as a knowledgeable jazz player with a strong command over harmony and style long ago; he brought a defined musical voice into this project. His study of Peruvian and Argentinean styles has deeply enriched his approach without drowning his voice. Keezer attacks the music from an informed and authentic perspective, yet he shines as a smart jazz pianist, providing interesting reharmonizations and thought provoking improvisations. Alcázar serves as the group’s heartbeat, playing with a strength that bridges the two worlds and mirrors Keezer’s defined artistry. His “hybrid drum kit,” a combination of traditional trap drums, cajon, and various percussion sounds, allows him to include sounds from both styles simultaneously - an amazing and virtuosic feat. Koutsovitis appears as a major contributor as well; her vocal interpretations of traditional songs connects the album strongly to both Peru and Argentina. She takes each piece to a new level of artistry with passionate performance that include improvised twists and a clever interplay with Keezer’s rich harmonic settings. There’s an overall sense of unity on the album on many levels - a bond between styles, musicians, and ideals that delivers a deeply satisfying and artistically intriguing experience. Keezer’s creative explorations lead him to a new level of musical expression on Áurea, a new direction for the jazz pianist that hopefully he will continue to follow in the future.

Rhythm, Culture and Geoffrey Keezer: Global Collaboration Yields Áurea

If lando and festejo become staples of jazz north of the border, we’ll be able to trace these influences not only to their roots in West Africa, coastal Peru and rural Argentina, but all the way to Eau Claire, Wisconsin, hometown of Geoffrey Keezer, one of American jazz’s most ardent brokers of global music. Among the most respected performers and composers on the scene today, Keezer was the wunderkind pianist in the last edition of Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers (at age 18) before moving on to other prestigious collaborations, including the Contemporary Piano Ensemble (with James Williams, Mulgrew Miller, Donald Brown, and Harold Mabern) in the early 1990s, and more recently with the late Ray Brown, Christian McBride, Jim Hall and Dianne Reeves.

Despite his Midwest upbringing, Geoffrey has long held a fascination for global folk traditions, resulting in such projects as Falling Up (MaxJazz 2003) with Hawaiian slack-key guitarist Keola Beamer and Yasukatsu Oshima with Geoffrey Keezer (JVC Victor 2007), focusing on the music of Okinawa’s Ryukyu Islands. And he is currently at work writing an arrangement of a Korean folk song for a chamber group in San Diego. “I think somewhere along the way, maybe in my 20's, I had a kind of heart-opening experience listening to traditional Japanese koto music, and then started checking out Balinese Gamelan, North Indian classical music, etc., etc. I kind of went nuts in Tower records and bought everything in the ‘world music’ section. I think I was hearing connections between every kind of music in the world, not so much in a technical or intellectual sense, but in a heart sense, something in music that speaks to our common humanity. I was realizing that every culture has ‘soul,’ to paraphrase Ray Charles.”

But Keezer’s interest in Afro-Peruvian music is quite recent, dating back to a big band performance at a jazz festival in Peru in 2004 and sharing the stage with a group of Peruvian musicians. Previously, he recalls, “I had only heard the music of the Andes, you know, the guys with pan flutes and drums that play on street corners in major cities...But I was totally unaware of Afro-Peruvian music, the music of coastal Peru... What makes Afro-Peruvian music so intriguing to me is the unique combination of cultures found in Peru, which in turn influence the music. In Peru you've got descendants of Amerindians, Spanish, African, even Chinese and Japanese… Peru's cultural crossover with Africa predates America's, and many more of the African elements are retained in the music than in jazz.” Thus began Keezer’s quest to compose music inspired by Peruvian traditions and to record the project through ArtistShare. His first such adventure as leader (Keezer earlier recorded a duo album on ArtistShare with Jim Hall), he was enthused about the options available through the audience participation format. “The ArtistShare business model offers unprecedented personal access to the artistic process. It's like seeing the bonus material to a DVD before the movie comes out.”

Through Áurea (a type of Peruvian lily), Keezer assembled an array of familiar and new collaborators who would participate in varying combinations: Hugo Alcázar, Peruvian percussionist who handles the trapset for Peruvian trumpeter Gabriel Alegria’s band; Nigerian bassist Essiet Essiet; Argentinean vocalist Sofia Koutsovitas; and American musicians, drummer and trio-mate Jon Wikan; alto/soprano saxophonist and frequent cohort Steve Wilson; guitarists Mike Moreno and Peter Sprague; and tenor saxophonist Ron Blake. Geoffrey’s wife Susan Wullff, bassist with the San Diego Symphony, adds her bowed voice to two tracks. “I wanted to form a band where I could do a lot of different things,” says Keezer. “Essiet Essiet (bass) and I played together in my first professional gig, Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers. Besides being a great bassist and team player, I chose Essiet for Áurea because he's from Nigeria and is well versed in West African Highlife music. I wanted to explore the African side of Afro-Peruvian music a little more, so some of our music is coming from that vantage point. Steve Wilson and I have worked together off and on for the past 15 years or so, in many contexts.”

The addition of Koutsovitas was important on multiple levels. “She's from Argentina, and writes all her own music that draws on many South American influences,” notes Geoffrey, [She is] very knowledgeable on all the different musics of South America and she has several other projects going with musicians from Colombia and Peru.” In fact, it was Sofia’s influence that expanded Aurea from exclusively Afro-Peruvian to include traditional Argentine music as well. Noted Keezer in an interview with All About Jazz, “She gave me a massive download of all this folkloric music from all over South America...Argentina is mostly known for the tango, but actually there's a huge element in their folkloric music [that is] of African influence, very similar to Afro-Peruvian music. The slave trade is the reason for the presence of African music in the Americas. But that whole thing swept down into Argentina. She said in the 1800s, Argentina was like one-third black, and the government rubbed everybody out. But the elements of that music still exist there. There are some very strong similarities." Video clips available on the ArtistShare site document Keezer’s education as he interacts with bandmates who grew up with the traditions that inspire the new music. Koutsovitas notes that there are thousands of rhythms from Colombia alone.

Áurea was released on ArtistShare in December 2008, a journey of about four years spanning much of the western hemisphere. Five compositions are Keezer’s contemporary creations drawing on South American traditions, while three were written by contemporary Argentine composer/songwriters. “A great deal of the music was composed prior to recording,” notes Geoffrey. “There are of course sections of each piece where improvisation takes over, where the composed tidbits serve only as guidelines to individual player's improvisation; but on the whole each song was pretty thoroughly mapped out in advance. The exceptions would be the trio pieces (‘La Flor Azul’ and ‘Vidala De Lucho’) where we just used the basic structure of the song and created an arrangement collectively.”

While the music is of course the main event, the experience of Áurea is incomplete without the context provided by interviews and video clips of rehearsals and discussions available through ArtistShare. Like its namesake, Áurea unfolds and blossoms with engaging melodies, danceable rhythms filled with energy and open spaces filled with joy. Long attracted to basslines, Keezer’s strong left hand gives length and elegance to the bass phrases that infuse his compositions, while the four tracks that feature Koutsovitas are filled with horn-like harmonies, even without horns. At least to these ears, at times there’s a trace of Bach in these tunes, toccata and fugue- like journeys on the keys, enveloped in traditions that were surely far removed from 17th century Europe!

The set opens with Keezer’s “Cayendo Para Arriba,” performed by the core quartet of Keezer, Essiet, Alcázar and Wikan, along with Steve Wilson on alto. A repeating piano pattern and steady percussion sways the music forward as Keezer displays a Tyneresque quality in both composition and execution, with clearly articulated phrases and meaty chords. Wilson twists and turns, the two percussionists adding a steady groove marked by intermittent fire.

A larger ensemble follows with Keezer’s “Una Bruja Buena” (“The Good Witch”), featuring Ron Blake on alto, Mike Moreno on electric guitar, Phil O’Connor on bass clarinet, and Koutsovitas on vocals. The octet makes it a celebration of “anyone who does magical things” while Alcázar’s quijada (donkey jawbone) adds a subtle rattle throughout. The bass clarinet was added after the initial recording session, Keezer seeking to double the basslines through overdubs; Sofia’s voice was also overdubbed in the studio, a session that can be observed via ArtistShare.

Sofia introduced Geoffrey to “La Flor Azul” (written by Mario Armedo Gallo and Antonio Rodriguez Villar), a song she heard growing up about “sorrow and love, endless sorrow...” Reflecting the northern Argentinean folkloric tradition, the instrumentation is pared down to piano, percussion (Alcázar) and voice, although Keezer manages to play bass notes in his left hand while strumming a guitar in his right hand. Keezer notes that the song has an overlapping 6/8 rhythm, the bass part in 3/4 and percussion straddling both. “La Flor Azul” is a folk dance, Keezer’s solo filled with flourishes as a modern deconstruction of tradition, and featuring some of the most elaborate keyboarding I’ve heard from him. Sofia alters the rhythmic pattern in her return verse, giving the song a more serious quality.

Keezer’s “Araña Amarilla” (a desert flower) begins with piano and alto sax (Steve Wilson) in unison, the harmonies suggesting two horns. Both Wikan and Alcázar use cajon and palmas (hand claps), producing a popping beat. Keezer explores his melody, tracing with intricate single lines, Essiet also tracing that single line with a gurgling bass. The pace picks up, the percussion a steady force as the flower unfolds and Keezer adds layers of texture, while Wilson takes off on a slithery solo, all dissolving into a finale of hand percussion.

Keezer’s “Leucadia” is a sweeping composition that features the core quartet with acoustic guitarist Peter Sprague, who triples as recording engineer and mixmaster. Repeating piano phrases rotate above hard-hitting but airy percussion. Alcázar’s furious handwork on the cajon is prominent throughout. The ensemble surges as if introducing an orchestra; Sprague weaves the theme around Keezer, who drops chords into spaces like pebbles into water, sending waves of sound out from the center. The track begs for dancers, although the rhythm shifts, making it difficult to follow your partner! The use of electric bass under acoustic guitar yields a sonically interesting pattern, while Keezer’s phrases climb, then descend in cascades of single notes interspersed with sequences of chords. Although at times suggestive of Cuban pianists, there’s more of an American bop feel.

Arranged for octet by Geoffrey, “La Nostalgiosa” (by Argentines Eduardo Falú and Jaime Dávalos) flows like a lullaby, telling the tale of a “wounded soul” through samba-like rhythms.

Starting with a melancholy single piano line (which Geoffrey describes as “a suspiciously Okinawan treatment”), Keezer moves into a catchy, repeating harmonic line beneath Koutsovitas’s melody. As in a round, each instrument enters with its own voice. On flute, Ron Blake picks up the melodic lead with a more complex harmonic structure while the percussion is more assertive. Susan Wulff’s bowed bass is very subtle, giving the song just a hint of darkness.

Geoffrey’s “Miraflores” references an area of Lima known for its gardens and beaches. With the core quartet only (no voice, no horn, no guitar), the musicians create an almost sinister opening with rhythmic hesitations filled by percussion, particularly the cajon. Keezer delivers the keyboard’s floral bouquet, at times recalling American blues laced with the more percussive theme of the opening segment. The pianist develops more and more intricate ideas, like gems turned in a tumbler by the underlying multiphonic percussion and pulse of the electric bass. The tempo moves from fast to slow, while the hesitations in rhythm and furious percussion interrupt the calm. Bop meets tango.

The closing “Vidala De Lucho was written by Argentine guitarist Juan Falú, nephew of the legendary Eduardo Falú, and written for a brother who disappeared in a coup d’etat in 1970s Argentina. On ArtistShare, Koutsovitas noted that the lyrics were very powerful tributes to those who disappeared and the families who sought to find them for many years, never knowing what happened. The smallest ensemble of the set, “Vidala De Lucho” draws its power from only piano, voice and percussion (Alcázar), with Susan Wulff adding bowed bass to the finale. An introductory piano solo soars like Liszt and Debussy at the same time, dark and brooding. Sofia enters with a wistful song over minimal piano accompaniment, Keezer becoming a more substantial presence on the second verse. Percussion is added to the third verse, and although it sounds like a rain stick, the posted video on ArtistShare confirms Alcázar uses brushes on the snare. Geoffrey’s later solo features rippling phrases from both hands, extended harmonies and more percussive effects. With Sofia’s return, the piano creates an underlying storm, then recedes into a more gentle resolution of bowed bass and chimes.

Whether melding swing with post bop, Africa with South America, or Okinawa with Wisconsin, Geoffrey Keezer proves time and again that respect for cultural tradition is an asset, not a hindrance, in seeking an original voice in music. Like a sonic sponge, Keezer immerses himself in folk tales and folk arts, in history and geography, soaking up “something really old” and wringing out new compositions and arrangements that allow his listeners to peer through that “window of rhythm” and into a poet’s soul. Among a growing list of projects seeking to infuse American jazz with traditions of other cultures, Áurea is surely one of the most honest and satisfying.

Today’s results include a couple of new categories to the Best of the Year Awards - Large Ensemble Album of the Year and Brazilian Jazz Album of the Year. The Latin Jazz world is expanding, and that was readily apparent in 2008. A couple of outstanding albums rose to represent these categories, getting them off to a good start. Best Latin Jazz Drum Kit Player of 2008: Hugo Alcazar
Peruvian Drummer Hugo Alcazar has been on the forefront of the mixture between jazz and traditional Peruvian music, combining his extensive experience with both styles. He grew up in Lima, Peru, jumping into drum studies at the young age of seven. He began his professional career by the time he was 19, and moved right into the National Conservatory of Music.

At the same time, Alcazar maintained a focus upon traditional Peruvian music, studying cajon with Juan “Cotito” Medrano, Leonardo “Gigio” Parodi and Freddy “Huevito” Lobatón. In Peru, Alcazar has recorded extensively with Latin Jazz flautist Cesar Peredo, taking part in the 1999 release Despertando, the 2000 recording Pensamento, the 2004 album Cosas de Negro, and the 2007 release Mas Calientes Que Nunca.

The word of Alcazar’s talents has spread, and he has performed with a number of jazz musicians from the States, both in Peru and abroad. The list of musicians that have utilized his talents include the Maria Schneider Orchestra, Bobby Shew, Ingrid Jensen, Mark Levine, and Geoffrey Keezer.

His work with trumpeter Gabriel Alegria’s Afro-Peruvian Jazz Sextet has really allowed Alcazar to spread his talents on a world stage. His playing on Alegria’s 2008 release Nuevo Mundo effortlessly moves between burning swing and intensive Afro-Peruvian rhythms, showing the natural relation between the two styles. As the group prepares for a 2009 tour, we’ll hope to hear more fantastic playing from Alcazar!

Patrón básico y escritura rítmica del Festejo

El "Festejo" es el género y/o ritmo más alegre de la costa peruana, con singular canto, ritmo sincopado y bailes muy sensuales. Desde su aparición este ritmo a evolucionado de lo tradicional a lo que hoy llamamos "Fusión", es por ello que en la actualidad lo podemos escuchar en el pop y en el jazz peruano, teniendo este último gran aceptación a nivel internacional.

El festejo no esta basado en una "clave rítmica constante" como la música cubana en donde la "clave" es el principal motor de la percusión y la melodía; en el festejo, todo lo que sucede, esta basado en los golpes y el sentir del cajón, el acompañamiento de la guitarra tocados con mucha espontaneidad y comunicación y la melodía cantada. A mediados del siglo anterior se realizaron la primeras recopilaciones y grabaciones de Festejo con el afán de rescatar la tradición de la cultura negra y cuando empezó lo hicieron al compás de 6/8.

Una de las canciones de Festejo que se considera como la mas antigua es el "Congorito" o "Congorito digo yo" teniendo en el estribillo del coro un claro ejemplo de subdivisión rítmica y sentir negro del Perú.

Actualmente todos las composiciones, arreglos musicales y golpes de percusión están escritos en el compás de 12/8, posiblemente siempre lo estuvo pero en el transcurso del tiempo se fue estableciendo.

Durante las giras que he realizado tanto en el Perú como en el extranjero difundiendo la música afro peruana en conferencias y clases maestras, he podido apreciar la gran inquietud que existe entre los asistentes por conocer, entender y disfrutar el ritmo de "Festejo".

La separata ""Patrón básico de Festejo: Análisis" muestra información sobre el patrón básico y solfeo , la interpretación con acentos y la simplificación rítmica en variaciones. Este análisis también les servirá como punto de partida para el entendimiento musical de este género, basado en la conversión rítmica de un patrón básico de festejo tocado en el Cajón y la célula rítmica del estribillo de la canción popular "congorito digo yo" (parte del coro).

Patrón básico de Festejo: Análisis

Pautas:

Es aconsejable escuchar muy atentamente grabaciones y/o presenciar espectáculos de corte tradicional. Les sugiero escuchar el audio de la versión de "Congorito digo yo" de la agrupación Perú Negro y la canción "Cumanana" tema de característica de Victoria Santa Cruz.
Para sentir el pulso o beat es necesario marcarlo como "negra con punto" en un compás de 12 por 8.
El festejo tiene un patrón básico o célula rítmica, en el ejemplo 1 podrán observar también tres formas de solfeo rítmico.
En el ejemplo 2 se ha colocado el mismo patrón añadiendo los acentos principales.
El ejemplo 3 muestra el patrón básico simplificado en base a los acentos, en tres variaciones (a,b,c).
El ejemplo 4 muestra uno de los patrones de acompañamiento mas usados.

Cuando se haya terminado de revisar estas pautas podrán darse cuenta de lo divertido e interesante que es el ritmo de ¡FESTEJO!.

Destacados músicos apoyan la Fiesta de la Música en el Perú 2008 - Sábado 29 de noviembre

Bajo el lema “¡La música sale a las calles! “el Patronato Peruano de la Música realizará por segundo año consecutivo La Fiesta de la Música en el Perú en el mes de noviembre.

Para ello, la Embajada de Francia y la Alianza Francesa, instituciones auspiciadoras de este gran festejo, realizaron la presentación del Comité de Honor de la Fiesta de la Música el miércoles 6 de agosto. El Comité, encargado de conferir a la Fiesta el realce y respaldo necesarios para promover la convocatoria a esta actividad, está integrado por los presidentes de las Alianzas Francesas del Perú, por destacadas personalidades de la vida cultural del país y por reconocidos músicos de los géneros más distintivos. Algunos de sus miembros son: Raúl García Zárate, Jaime Guardia, Alicia Maguiña, Susana Baca, Gianmarco, Martha Mifflin, Mabela Martínez, Hugo Alcázar, Denisse Arregui, Javier Echecopar, Wilfredo Tarazona, Julie Freundt, Miki González, Joselito, Gabriel Alegría, Gerardo Manuel Rojas, Jean Pierre Magnet, Manongo Mujica, Pepita García Miró, Sonia Morales, Pilar de la Hoz, entre otros .

Para el presente año se han sumado a este gran festejo musical, que se realizará el sábado 29 de noviembre, las ocho Alianzas Francesas de ciudades del interior del país, con lo cual la envergadura de esta actividad ha alcanzando una amplitud a nivel nacional. Se espera que todas las entidades gubernamentales, ediles y privadas de la capital, así como las de provincias, se aúnen a este proyecto en beneficio de toda la población del país.

La Fiesta de la Música consiste en brindar a la comunidad en general la oportunidad de presenciar eventos públicos y gratuitos en los que participan músicos profesionales, aficionados y amateurs de todos los géneros musicales sin distinción de niveles.

De la misma forma, es el día en que la población tiene la oportunidad de manifestarse a través de la música, independientemente de la edad, tipo de agrupación musical y estilo, pues las personas salen a tocar y cantar. La calle se convierte en el escenario para un concierto simultáneo que se hace en diferentes espacios, y durante todo el día. De esta manera, el Patronato Peruano de la Música, apunta a popularizar y democratizar la práctica musical y hacer que niños, jóvenes y adultos de todos los estratos sociales se familiaricen con todas las expresiones musicales.

Después de una exitosa gira por EEUU realizada el pasado mes de junio y de grabar su último álbum de Jazz, liderando su quinteto integrado por destacados músicos estadounidenses como Peter Schimke, Pete Whitman y Kevin Washington, regresa al escenario del Jazz Zone el virtuoso guitarrista y compositor Andrés Prado, quien fue galardonado con el “Premio a la Innovación” otorgado por Nokia durante el Primer Festival de Música organizado por Claro y El Comercio, en marzo de este año.

Prado, quien acaba de regresar de Inglaterra de un viaje de conciertos y clases maestras, realizará una presentación donde interpretará un repertorio de temas propios que van de la música latinoamericana al jazz contemporáneo, algunos de ellos de su última producción. Last week was the Lima Jazz Festival, a week long festival, with master classes during the day and concerts at night. The highlight of the festival was the Ndugu Chancler Jazz Peru Project, where three time grammy nominated drummer, producer, composer, and clinician, Ndugu Chancler, who has performed and recorded with Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, George Duke, Patrice Rushen, Hubert Laws, The Crusaders, Frank Sinatra, Weather Report, Lionel Richie, Kenny Rogers, Thelonious Monk, John Lee Hooker, and was the drummer for the Michael Jackson "thriller" album, teamed up with the Gabriel Alegria Sextet, and the Seattle Women's Jazz Orchestra, to perform the songs from the Gabriel Alegria's, Saponegro Album, Nuevo Mundo. It was really a great show to see.

Trumpeter and composer Gabriel Alegria has developed a unique form of World Jazz that combines his distinctive approach to the jazz trumpet with the rich heritage of Afro-Peruvian music.
Alegria will appear at Joe's Pub with his Afro-Peruvian Sextet featuring saxophonist Laurandrea Leguia; acoustic guitarist Yuri Juarez; bassist Ramon de Bruyn, drummer Hugo Alcazar and master percussionist Freddy “Huevito" Lobaton, who plays the traditional Afro-Peruvian instruments cajon (box drum) and quijada (jaw bone) and adds spectacular passages of zapateo dancing to each performance.
Alegria and his Afro-Peruvian Sextet will be joined at Joe's Pub by the renowned Peruvian vocalist Eva Ayllon.
The ensemble will also accompany Ms. Ayllon in her first public performance in a jazz context in advance of her appearance with the Gabriel Alegria Afro-Peruvian Sextet at the Festival Internacional Jazz Peru in March 2008.
A native of Lima, Peru, Gabriel Alegria is the founder and artistic director of Jazz Peru Internacional (JPI), the premier jazz arts and cultural exchange organization in his homeland and producer of the annual Festival Internacional Jazz Peru. Alegria was recently named Associate Director of the Jazz Studies Program at New York University and has been living in New York City since September 2007.
Eva Ayllon is a renowned vocalist revered as the “Queen of Lando" not only in her native Peru but also around the world. Ms. Ayllon's stature in Afro-Peruvian music circles is comparable to Cesria vora's in the world of the morna music of Cape Verde or the late Cuban salsa star Celia Cruz.

In 2000 Alegria founded Jazz Peru Internacional (JPI), Peru's premier jazz arts and cultural exchange organization whose goal is to spread the message of peace, love and joy found in Afro-Peruvian music around the world. Under the auspices of JPI, countless artists, students and music fans have toured internationally and Alegria continues to work for the internationalization of Afro- Peruvian jazz music and education.
Alegria combines his experience playing jazz as it developed in the U.S. with a passionate interest and careful study of the black music of coastal Per. By incorporating and exploring the common African roots found in both styles, he has developed a uniquely Afro-Peruvian jazz music concept. With the release in 2002 of Un Rezo, Alegria's recording debut as a leader, many Afro-Peruvian rhythmic concepts were introduced into the mainstream jazz language for the first time. The CD Nuevo Mundo includes collaborations with jazz artist Tierney Sutton, Bobby Shew, Russell Ferrante and Bill Watrous as well as with the formidable native Afro- Peruvian artists Freddy “Huevito" Lobaton (Peruvian percussion - cajon, quijada, cajita), Hugo Alcazar (drums), Jocho Velazquez (acoustic guitar) and Joscha Oetz (bass). The CD, which includes six compositions by Alegria and his Afro-Peruvian jazz arrangement of the Gershwin classic “Summertime," represents, represents his most varied work as a trumpeter and composer to date.

Ingrid Jensen’s ArtistShare debut offers a fresh insight into a worldly trumpeter already established as a formidable player in the hard bop idiom. On At Sea she embarks on a journey into the often treacherous territory of post-Miles electro/acoustic jazz (where other trumpeters' individual voices are frequently eclipsed) and proves that she is a truly original composer.

Dispensing with the customary front-line foil of a saxophonist, Jensen surrounds her sound with Geoff Keezer’s orchestral keyboard accompaniment. The title track is a plaintive piece (with an ethereal ECM-ish atmosphere) that dynamically builds in intensity while maintaining a captivating lyricism. A cymbal interlude by drummer Jon Wikan, “Storm,” connects the opener to Keezer’s dedication “Captain Jon,” a powerful straightahead cooker that takes on a Latin flavor.

“As Love Does” begins impressionistically before gradually transforming into a melodic ballad that showcases Matt Clohesy’s tasteful bass playing and Keezer’s virtuoso touch. “Tea and Watercolors,” by Keezer, is another spacious outing in a Miles-ish mood that features Jensen’s piercing muted trumpet and guest artist Lage Lund’s lithe electric guitar.

Two painstakingly rendered standards, “There Is No Greater Love” and “Everything I Love,” testify to Jensen’s increasing maturity and sensitivity as an interpreter of the Great American Songbook.

On the latter, her interpolation of Afro-Peruvian lando rhythms (with percussionist Hugo Alcazar) shows that she has become an insightful arranger who's willing to take chances.

The final two original selections—the delightfully playful “Swotterings” (again with Lund on guitar) and the moving tribute “KD Lang,” an episodic suite with compelling contributions by each of the quartet’s members—mark a turning point in Jensen’s career, one clearly headed in the right direction.

Playing in a large Los Angeles concert hall for the first time Wednesday night, the Maria Schneider Jazz Orchestra gave us a startlingly different yet wonderful vision of what a big band can sound like.
In fact, there were a couple of passages that rose to the spine-chilling level of sublime -- and when was the last time that happened at a big band concert?

A small-town Minnesota native, as she enthusiastically pointed out several times, Schneider became a protegee of Gil Evans (quite a role model) toward the end of his life. Since then, she has established a solid foothold in the New York jazz scene as a progressive big-band leader, even breaking some ground last year when her "Concert in the Garden" CD became the first Internet-only-distributed album to win a Grammy (available through Mariaschneider.com). There are still trace elements of Evans in Schneider's harmonic writing, yet she has evolved far beyond his influence -- finding new combinations of color within big-band conventions, daring to give the hoary old accordion a distinctive lead voice, using the piano, electric guitar and drum kit in a painter-like fashion and leading her band with graceful swimming motions.

There are overt displays of autobiography in Schneider's work, distinct storylines, moments when the pulse disappears and the mood is everything. Indeed, Schneider's band has more of a kinship with Europe's adventurous big bands than it does with her mostly tradition-shackled American colleagues.

The opening number, the title track from "Concert in the Garden," set the table gorgeously, with gong-like use of cymbals, a high note on the accordion resembling the whine of bowed crotales, clusters from the piano and a samba groove gently propelling the piece on its way.

The evening's other revelation was "The Pretty Road," which Schneider described at length as a love song to her hometown of Windom, Minn. It's a narrative tone poem, opening with plain, sturdy Midwestern harmonies, building in volume and drive until it dissolves in a tranquil, idyllic, touching vision of a small town as seen from high on a hill.

"Aires de Lando," a commission from the Los Angeles Philharmonic, explored South American cross-rhythms in a laid-back, tango-like groove, and "Hang Gliding" was a graphic play-by-play of the thrills and terror of a hang gliding episode Schneider experienced in Brazil.

Big-band concerts usually strive to leave you breathless and super-charged. This one made you feel contemplative, absorbed, emotionally moved. Just like Gil.

La propuesta en escena y experiencia con Eva Ayllón en el Festival Jazz Perú 2008 fue musicalmente emocionante, profesional y con muchas expectativas ante la reacción del público.

Esta iniciativa nació el año pasado (2007) cuando Eva fue a vernos a un concierto en New York con Gabriel Alegría y el Sexteto de Jazz Afroperuano, a partir de ahí, se hizo todo lo necesario para hacerlo realidad ¡y se cumplió!.

El Jon's Pub de New York fué el punto principal para el estreno del concierto y sobre todo para un público de jazz muy selecto; la respuesta fué positiva recibiendo buenos comentarios; esto motivo, a continuar con los retos, pero esta vez en el Perú.

El Festival Jazz Perú 2008 fue el punto elegido, ante un lleno total en el auditorio de la Biblioteca Nacional del Perú, Eva Ayllón demostró que es una mujer de mucha experiencia, valentía, profesionalismo y sobre toda de una enorme calidad humana.

El repertorio delicadamente seleccionado a cargo de los arreglos musicales de Gabriel Alegría, las composiciones de Laura Andrea Leguia, la letra creada sobre las lineas melódicas de "Footprints" por Eva, el fabuloso sonido de Juan Carlos Estremadoyro y nuestra entrega musical en el escenario, hicieron que todo estos ingredientes se combinarán para una noche extraordinaria, diferente y satisfactoria recibiendo la aceptación de la audiencia ante una nueva propuesta musical.

Este original CD con ritmos negros de nuestro país incluye cinco composiciones de Peredo y dos arreglos suyos: un festejo inspirado en una pieza de Rimsky Korsakov, y un landó basado en una sonata para flauta de Handel. César Peredo es un eximio flautista, que ha realizado estudios en el Conservatorio Nacional de Música, en la Escuela Superior de Música de Detmold-Alemania y en la ciudad de Los Angeles, California. Integrante de la Orquesta Filarmónica de Lima durante 9 años, ha actuado y grabado al lado de grandes artistas, como Placido Domingo, Eva Ayllón, Cecilia Barraza, Dave Valentin y Orlando Valle. En 1989 Peredo decidió crear un grupo que divulgue la fusión del jazz con ritmos peruanos y latinoamericanos, y desde 1996 esta agrupación se denomina "Los de adentro". Lima - Perú, (ORBITA).- Después de dedicarle un disco al bossa nova, al jazz con sabor peruano y los dúos de guitarra y voz, la reconocida Pilar de la Hoz nos entrega quizás su trabajo más maduro, donde encontramos un poco de cada uno de los estilos que viene cultivando. Se trata de nueva producción discográfica, titulada “ Hozadías”, donde se podrá encontrar 10 temas muy bien logrados.
Esta cuarta producción “HOZADÍAS” es una búsqueda de fusionar la música peruana con diferentes elementos del jazz y la bossa nova donde reafirmar su ser la primera cantante de jazz con sabor peruano.
Para este trabajo, Pilar convocó a músicos de distintas canteras; Edward Pérez, contrabajista puertorriqueño afincado en Boston, hizo el arreglo de un Standard de jazz en ritmo de festejo; Kiki Sánchez, pianista peruano radicado en Florida, se encargo de otro Standard de jazz ; Sergio Valdeos, guitarrista de Susana Baca elaboró el arreglo de un huayno y de un tema del cantautor brasileño Djavan. Finalmente, Pepe Céspedes, pianista del trío Manante, trabajó sobre los temas de autores peruanos como son: Olga Milla, Kiri Escobar y Pepe Villalobos.
Los músicos que participaron en la grabación también son de destacar: Alonso Acosta, Juan Medrano “Cotito”, Mangué Vásquez, Omar Rojas, Kharlos Misajel, Hugo Alcázar, Néstor Benítez, Angel Irujo, Josha Oetz, Cali Flores, Marielena Pacheco, Hugo Bravo.
“Hozadías”, dentro de lo que se podría denominar música peruana contemporánea, es una nueva e interesante propuesta que el público conocedor de la buena música, sabrá apreciar.
Por ello, Pilar alista un nuevo espectáculo que se realizará este 28 de marzo en el ICPNA de Miraflores donde presentará “Hozadias”. Cabe resaltar que esta nueva producción sale bajo el sello Play Music y se podrá adquirir en todas las discotiendas.

Richie Zellón, guitarrista y compositor, después de mucho tiempo regreso al Perú lanzando al mercado peruano su nuevo CD "Landologia ", que fué grabado con Felix Casaverde, Oscar Stagnaro, Manuel Miranda, Ramon Stagnaro, Miguel Figueroa, Pocho Purizaga, Hector Veneros, Pochi Marambio, Carlos Wong y otros.

Realizado en 1982 bajo el titulo "Retrato en Blanco y Negro" y considerado como la primera fusión de los ritmos afroperuanos con el Jazz, en esta grabación que ahora reviste características históricas, participaron importantes músicos peruanos, como los guitarristas Félix Casaverde, Ramón Stagnaro y Ricardo Barreda, el bajista Oscar Stagnaro , el flautista Manuel Miranda y el baterista Pocho Purizaga. Este álbum, ha sido reeditado y remasterizado digitalmente en formato de CD, bajo el título de “Landología”. Esta edición especial además incluye 4 “bonus tracks” grabados en vivo en concierto durante el año 1981 donde ademas participan Hector Veneros, Pochi Marambio y Carlos Wong.

Drummer, percussionist, composer, educator, Vic Firth artist and "Best Latin Jazz Drum Kit" 2008 and 2009 by Latin Jazz Corner (USA).

His beginnings
Hugo Alcazar was born in Lima - Peru (may 23, 1971) and started playing drums at the age of seven. By his nineteen years he had already begun playing professionally. He attained a degree in percussion faculty from the National Conservatory of Music in Lima.

He studied Peruvian Cajón with the best "cajoneadores" (Cajón players) such as Juan "Cotito" Medrano, Leonardo "Gigio" Parodi and Freddy "Huevito" Lobatón and Batá Drums with the recognized Cuban percussionist and educator Roberto Borrell.

Performed with such jazz greats as Maria Schneider Orchestra, Ingrid Jensen, Russell Ferrante, Pedro Aznar, Katchie Cartwright, Bill Watrous, Bobby Shew, Arthur Lipner, Billy Kerr, Jeff Gardner, Mark Levine, Michele Weir, Seattle Women's Jazz Orchestra and the Jazz Peru Project Band with Ndugu Chancler, Kenny Werner, Lenny Pickett, Geoffrey Keezer - ÁUREA Project ,Duet drumset solo 's in Perú with famous drummers as Walfredo Reyes Jr, Sony Emory and Akira Jimbo.

Many concerts with Eva Ayllón, Cesar Peredo y Los de Adentro, Mixtura Jazz A Capella, Richie Zellon, Pilar de La Hoz and others.

Extensive touring with Gabriel Alegria's Afro-Peruvian Jazz Sextet in the United States , Canada and Peru spreading the Afro-Peruvian Rhythms and the fusion with the jazz.

Currently, Hugo Alcázar represents Vic Firth (sticks products), Music Market - Yamaha Drums (Beech Custom Absolute), Cymbals Pork (cymbals), and A Tempo (Cajón and Peruvian percussion instruments).

Merits
In 2003 the guild Radio and Television journalists of Peru granted him the Medal of Institucional Honor and Diploma to the Merit, in recognition to his outstanding performance and career, as well as for his contribution to the development and progress of Peru.

The Pacific Jazz Institute at Dimitriou's Jazz Alley in Seattle presents for two nights only(February 6 - 7) composer/conductor Maria Schneider and her 19-piece Jazz Orchestra.

Band members include: Steve Wilson (alto/soprano/clarinet/flute/alto flute/oboe/Englishhorn), Charles Pillow (alto/soprano/clarinet/flute/alto flute/oboe/English horn), RichPerry (tenor/flute), Donny McCaslin (tenor/soprano/clarinet/flute), Scott Robinson(baritone/flute/clarinet/bass clarinet), Tony Kadleck (trumpet/flugelhorn), Greg Gisbert(trumpet/flugelhorn), Jon Owens (trumpet/flugelhorn), Ingrid Jensen(trumpet/flugelhorn), Keith O-Quinn (trombone), Rock Ciccarone (trombone), LarryFarrell (trombone), George Flynn (bass trombone), Ben Monder (guitar), FrankKimbrough (piano), Jay Anderson (bass), Clarence Penn (drums), Jon Wikan (cajon),and Hugo Alcazar (cajon).

The Maria Schneider Jazz Orchestra came into being in 1993, appearing at Visiones inGreenwich Village every Monday night for a stretch of five years. Subsequently, herorchestra received invitations to perform at many jazz festivals and concert halls acrossEurope as well as in Brazil and Macau. She's received numerous commissions and invitesfor guest conducting her music with American and European orchestras. Countries withgroups that she's guest conducted include Italy, Portugal, France, Sweden, Denmark,Norway, Finland, Belgium, Holland, Germany, Slovenia, Austria, Canada, Scotland,Australia, Greenland and Iceland, as well as across the U.S. Commissions include theNorrbotten Big Band's and Danish Radio Orchestra's commission to arrange and conductconcerts with Toots Thielemans. She arranged a concert of Ivan Lins' music for IvanLins, Toots Thielemans and the Danish Radio Orchestra for an extensive European tourin 2003. Spring of 2004, she and her orchestra gave a series of four concerts at HunterCollege.

Maria's debut recording Evanescence, was nominated for two 1995 Grammy Awards:Best Large Jazz Ensemble Performance, and for its title piece, Best InstrumentalComposition. Her second and third recordings Coming About and Allgresse were alsoboth nominated for Grammy Awards as well. Maria has received two Jazz JournalistAwards for Best Composer, two for Best Arranger and one for Best Big Band. Maria haswon many of the DOWNBEAT and JAZZTIMES Critics and Readers Polls. Her third album,Allgresse was chosen by both TIME and BILLBOARD in their “Top Ten recordings of2000”, which was inclusive of all genres of music. Most recently Concert in the Gardenreceived a Grammy Award (2005), and is the first recording to receive the awardwithout being distributed in record stores.

Organized and led by Oakland-based Latin percussionist John Santos and Lake Charles, Louisana-based saxophonist Rick Condit, the jam featured top musicians from Puerto Rico, Cuba, Peru, Brazil, Mexico and the U.S.

The sizzling rhythm sections included Marc Levine andJovino Santos Neto (piano), drummer/percussionists Bobby Sanabria, Ruben Alvarez, Airto Moreira, Hugo Alcazar, the Banda brothers (Ramon on timbales and Tony on baby bass) and Jesse Stern (bass). Soloists in the front line were numerous, including Teco Cardoso, Carlos Malta, Harvey Wainapel (reeds), Susie Jensen (violin), Chris Washburne (trombone) and Richard Boukas (guitar).Besides the official IAJE Latin Jam, there was also an unofficial afterhours Brazilian Jam at the Hilton Hotel organized by IAJE Brazilian Music Chair Richard Boukas.

The otherwise low-key bar/lounge area suddenly filled to capacity for a three-hour session of classic choro, samba, baião and frevo.

The reunion of these musicians at both jams had such an infectious spirit that the audience was an integral part of the festivities.

With the ever-increasing presence of Afro-Cuban, Brazilian and other South American forms of Jazz at IAJE conventions, we are hoping that 2003/Toronto will include a Pro Brazilian Jam following the Pro Latin Jam, and then a superjam finale with musicians from all represented styles. Stay tuned!!
